8 Steps to Finish Your First Draft

Writing a book can seem daunting at first. But with these 8 steps, you can get your first draft done without all the stress. Don’t forget to check out our other articles on writing to help you with each step in the process!

  1. Start with an idea

The first step in writing a book is to have an idea. Your idea can come from anywhere - a personal experience, a news article, a dream, or simply your imagination. Write down your idea and start brainstorming possible directions for your story. For more on brainstorming ideas, click here.

2. Identify your main characters

Once you have an idea for your story, identify the main characters. Who are the key players in your story? What are their motivations and goals? Write down a brief description of each character and their role in the story.

3. Determine your story arc

Your story arc is the overall structure of your story. It includes the beginning, middle, and end, as well as the major plot points and conflicts. Determine the key events and turning points in your story, and map out how they will unfold over the course of the book.

4. Create an outline

Using your story arc as a guide, create an outline for your book. This can be a detailed outline or a more general overview, depending on your preference. Your outline should include the major plot points, key scenes, and any important details or information that you want to include in your story. 5. Divide your story into chapters

Once you have your outline, divide your story into chapters. This will help you create a pacing that keeps readers engaged and breaks the story into manageable chunks. Your chapter divisions should correspond to the major plot points and turning points in your story.

6. Flesh out your characters

Now that you have your characters and story structure in place, it's time to flesh out your characters. This means giving them depth, complexity, and unique personalities. Consider their backgrounds, motivations, and goals, and think about how these factors will influence their actions and decisions throughout the story.

7. Write your first draft

With your outline and character development complete, it's time to write your first draft. Follow your outline, but don't be afraid to deviate from it if inspiration strikes. Allow yourself the freedom to explore and experiment with your story as you write.

8. Revise and refine

Once you've completed your first draft, it's time to revise and refine. Read through your manuscript and identify areas that need improvement. This may include plot holes, inconsistencies, or weak character development. Make revisions and continue to refine your story until you're satisfied with the final product.
