2023 Monthly Challenge - January

January's theme is new beginnings. As the first month of the new year, in January, we focus on what's to come in the 12 months ahead of us.

Feel free to follow along in the 2023 Plan Your Writing Year Workbook. You can get your copy here.

The challenge

The challenge this month is to focus on who you want to become. Say goodbye to the person of 2022 – and mean it! Then, look forward to the new year. Who are you now, in 2023?

Spend some time really thinking about who you want to be. Make an effort to start thinking of that person as who you are rather than who you want to be. The new beginning is now, and the new you starts today!

Some exercises for this month's challenge (should you choose to accept it):

  • Create a brief ritual to say goodbye to the you of 2022. Light a candle, meditate, sing a song... whatever works for you. Just take some time to officially draw a close to last year and the person you used to be.

  • Do a freewriting exercise on the person you are now. Who is that person? What do you spend your time doing? What is most important to you? Write five words or phrases that best describe who you are now.

  • Think of a mantra to help you maintain focus this year. This mantra can be anything you like, as long as it inspires the new you!

  • How does the new you overcome obstacles? Brainstorm a few obstacles that might come up for you this year, and decide now how you will conquer them.
