Hi, I’m Caroline Barnhill.
I am an editor and book coach based in New Orleans, Louisiana. I have always loved the art of writing.
I wrote my first story when I was six years old. It was the tale of a heart who searched the world for happiness, which it finally found when it encountered another heart. I wrote my first novel in the sixth grade by hand in a three-prong folder, which mostly chronicled the social struggles of a girl hoping for popularity. A cliche idea, of course, but I can still remember how proud I was as the folder thickened with pages and pages of my words.
I continued to write throughout high school and college, though I majored in the sciences. In my junior year of college, I switched my major from Microbiology to English. While I loved the study of living things, I found that my longing was always for the written word. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and then faced the difficult choice: what next? Did I want to write? Teach?
I spent some time locked in my home office, experimenting with various plot ideas and writing books. I started to realize that my true joy came once the writing was done and I got to pick up the red pen. There is just something about taking words and making them better. Making a story rise to its fullest potential. And, honestly, my editor’s soul rejoices at the red marks on the page, even if they are all done electronically these days.
And so, I decided to try my hand at freelance editing. I found that I loved the work. I got to wake up every day and do my favorite things in the world: read and improve stories.
I began taking meetings with some of my writers to answer their questions about story development, craft, the publishing process, etc. I spent years coaching authors in the Elite Author Program with Go All In Media & Publishing as their Chief Editor and Book Coach.
I found that many of my authors had the same questions, struggles, and complaints. They needed someone to bounce ideas off of. They needed guidance through the writing process. They needed an editor from the first page, not just once the writing was done. They needed to feel like they weren’t so alone. And so, Writer Loft was born. The rest, as they say, is history.
